Perceptual effects of lexical competition on Cantonese tone categories

چکیده
Listeners use lexical information and the speech signal to categorize sounds recognize words despite substantial acoustic-phonetic variation in natural speech. In diachronic mergers, where systematic acts neutralize contrasts, role of lexicon becomes less clear. We examined how competition structures phonetic variability (merging) tone categories Cantonese using three experiments. categorized tokens from continua generated minimal pairs (Experiment 1: Word identification) word-nonword 2: Lexical decision). The presence a competitor at both continuum endpoints Experiment 1 maintained more discrete categorization functions for non-merging than 2 only one endpoint was word. merging pairs, effect different. Exploratory data goodness rating task, 3, suggest that affects internal category structure tones, but not tones. Overall, these provide evidence mergers affect boundaries lexicon, that, range acceptable is constrained by competitor.

Perceptual learning of Cantonese lexical tones by tone and non-tone language speakers
Two groups of listeners, one of native speakers of a tone language (Mandarin Chinese) and one of native speakers of a non-tone language (English) were trained to recognize Cantonese lexical tones. Performance before and after training was measured using closed response-set identification and pairwise difference rating tasks. Difference ratings were submitted to multidimensional scaling (MDS) an...
متن کاملPerceptual equivalence of approximated Cantonese tone contours
This paper describes a perceptual study on approximated Cantonese tone contours. We believe that the perception of tone contours relies mainly on the major trend of pitch movement, and is not sensitive to the exact F0 values at particular time instants. The tone contours of individual syllables and the transition between them are approximated as a small number of linear movements. The effect of...
متن کاملLexical tone in Cantonese spoken-word processing.
In three experiments, the processing of lexical tone in Cantonese was examined. Cantonese listeners more often accepted a nonword as a word when the only difference between the nonword and the word was in tone, especially when the F0 onset difference between correct and erroneous tone was small. Same-different judgments by these listeners were also slower and less accurate when the only differe...
متن کاملThe Effects of Intonation Patterns on Lexical Tone Production in Cantonese
This study investigated the influence of intonation patterns on lexical tone identity. The use of intonation in tonal languages poses an interesting research question since changes in the fundamental frequency (F0) of phonation serve two separate functions at the same time: marking of lexical meaning at the syllabic level and signaling intonation patterns at the sentential level. Speech materia...
متن کاملEffect of musical experience on learning lexical tone categories.
Previous studies suggest that musicians show an advantage in processing and encoding foreign-language lexical tones. The current experiments examined whether musical experience influences the perceptual learning of lexical tone categories. Experiment I examined whether musicians with no prior experience of tonal languages differed from nonmusicians in the perception of a lexical tone continuum....
